Getting the Ball Rolling (with this Blog) [Jane Divinski]

Kimberly asked me to get this Blog going by the end of 2008. I agreed. In the spirit of “undercommit and overdeliver” I am making this inaugural posting a day early!

So far three people have volunteered to contribute to the Blog; one will focus his writing upon Agile/Scrum/XP at a level of detail appropriate for those in senior management roles . The other two will write on a variety of relevant topics; examples include effective leadership and how to best respond to a changing environment: technology, market, corporate structure, acquisition.

The intent of this Blog is to share experience, help others avoid any mistakes we might have made :) and occasionally stir up some controversy so that we inspire some comments in response to the opinions published in the Blog. In the spirit of doing so I offer the following statements and related questions.

There are advantages and disadvantages to cutting your professional teeth in a small to medium company versus a large established corporation. The latter usually provides greater access to formal training whereas a smaller business entity can offer more informal opportunities to demonstrate leadership ability.

What was YOUR experience? What size of company would you recommend to engineers who want to take on leadership responsibilities or in your opinion does it not make a difference?

I wish you a very happy new year, hoping that 2009 will be a good one for us all.
